What are the signs of illness?

Hermit crabs can show signs of illness through changes in their behavior, appearance, and overall health. Common signs of illness in hermit crabs include lethargy or reduced activity, where a hermit crab that is not moving around as usual could be sick or stressed. A lack of appetite is another sign; if your hermit crab refuses to eat, it may be a sign of illness. Abnormal shell behavior, such as the crab refusing to leave its shell, appearing stuck, or frequently changing shells, could also indicate health issues. Discoloration of the exoskeleton, where the crab becomes pale or discolored, might suggest health problems. Excessive molting, where the crab molts too often or has difficulty completing the molting process, can be a sign of trouble. Additionally, missing or weak legs, visible wounds or lesions on the crab’s body, and mold or fungus growth on the crab or its shell could all point to an illness. Lastly, abnormal breathing or difficulty moving, such as labored movement or breathing, may indicate respiratory problems or a more severe condition. If you notice these signs, it’s important to check the hermit crab’s living conditions, diet, and care to resolve the issue. If symptoms persist, seeking advice from a vet specializing in exotic pets may be necessary.
